An excursion to see the Clapper Bridges of Austwick
The alternative route shown below will enable you to explore some of the lanes and footpaths around Austwick, and take you past the old Clapper bridges at Flascoe and the Pant. It will add distance and time to your journey, rejoining the Phototrail as it leaves Austwick (the Phototrail leads you directly through the village after descending from Norber).

The two bridges are good examples of primitive man-made crossings dating back to ancient times. Called 'Clapper bridges', they use long flags of local rock to span the noisy streams, often supported on boulders or stone pillars. Flascoe bridge in particular is a delightful place for a rest or even a picnic, but look out for sharp rocks if contemplating a bare foot paddle.
One last note: towards the end of this alternative route the path apparently takes you into a private garden. This is a public right of way as long as you keep to the edge of the garden. Please remember to close the gate.
